While many parents experience mild changes in mood during and after the birth of a child, 1 in 7 women and 1 in 10 men experience more significant symptoms which can benefit from therapy. Although “postpartum depression” is the term commonly used, there are actually several forms of PMAD parents may experience. People of any age, income level, race and culture can develop a PMAD. Symptoms may appear at any time during pregnancy and within the first year after delivery.

Symptoms may include:
- Feeling depressed or avoiding feeling
- Feeling hopeless
- Lack of interest in the baby
- Trouble concentrating or brain fog
- Feeling anxious or panicky
- Feeling angry or irritable
- Dizziness or heart palpitations
- Not able to sleep when baby sleeps
- Extreme worries or fears
- Flashbacks regarding pregnancy or delivery
- Avoiding things related to the delivery
- Scary and unwanted thoughts
- Feeling an urge to repeat certain behaviors to reduce anxiety
- Needing very little sleep while still functioning
- Feeling more energetic than usual
- Seeing images or hearing noises that others cannot see or hear
- Thoughts of harming yourself or the baby
