Counseling/therapy involves meeting with a therapist (such as a counselor or psychologist) to address emotional, social, or behavioral concerns. Trained and licensed clinicians work with you to consider a variety of treatments according to your treatment goals. The benefits of therapy are numerous and may include improved mood, personal growth, and interpersonal relationships. Disclaimer: Just because you come to therapy does not mean you will change or improve. The willingness to make changes is ultimately up to the individual. Please remember that we typically only have 1 hour per week in our offices and most of the change happens outside of the therapy room.
Counseling is not about coming to vent for an hour. While we have couches and you can lay down, we do not perform psychoanalysis. Counseling is an active process where the client shares and receives feedback, develops skills, and practices interventions to help in their real life outside of the office. Yes, there are times when people just need to “vent” and feel heard. And we have a space for that, to be sure. We will also encourage change.
